The Bagpipers of Punjab

During the British Raj, British military bands played bagpipes and other military parade instruments in cantonment areas. Locals would listen to this music. When the British discarded their instruments, Patialans would pluck up the unwanted bagpipes, drums and horns and master the instruments through playing a strange combination local songs and imitating the British & Scottish parade bands. This tradition, dating back 150 years, carries on today at weddings and other festivals.
